Although not technically a fertiliser, rock dust offers amazing benefits to plants and soil in the form of a multitude of essential trace elements and minerals. Often ignored by gardeners, trace elements are vitally important to plant life, growth, viability, sustainability, and yield.

Understanding how volcanic rock dust works to help feed the soil is basic biology. As voracious feeders that suck minerals out of the soil around them, plant roots deplete the soil’s natural reserves over time, causing plants to become stunted. Adding volcanic rock dust back into the soil causes those minerals to be accessible to plant roots as soon as they come into contact with it. As the rock continues to break down, additional nutrients are made available to the plant roots, guaranteeing the plants a consistent supply of nutrients.

Eco friendly rock dust enhances soil’s natural ability to capture and store carbon. It is found to benefit all types and pH of soil and promotes plant growth. It can be applied at any time of year and at any stage of plant growth. The only exception to this is when the ground is frozen and soil is impenetrable, or during high winds.

As an organic fertiliser and soil and compost improver, rock dust has many applications, and may also be used as follows: 

• As top dressing where it is simply sprinkled onto soil then raked in (worms and weather can also take care of this for you).
• As compost improver to mix with every bag or bin of mature compost
• As compost activator and accelerator for compost making systems when adding a new layer of compost to your compost bin or pile.
• As a tonic for wormeries where a small handful sprinkled on the surface encourages beneficial organisms and microbes. 
• As a mix with other plant foods, it works well with soil conditioners, animal manure and plant foods.
• As a salt replacement for cars or vans if stuck in snow and icy surfaces.
